“Mrs.
(Mary Ann) Gallagher is a warm, kind-hearted, and loving person who
always wears a smile. Her patience and commitment to helping our children
be successful has paid off tremendously. She helps children to believe
in themselves and discover that with perseverance, they can do anything.
We have seen positive growth in every child she works with.”

Becoming
a Volunteer . . .
The
Tempe Elementary School District invites and encourages parents/guardians
and community members who wish to share some of their valuable time
to help students. Involvement can include: working in the classroom
with students; helping with PTO/PTA sponsored activities; serving as
library assistants, field trip helpers, room mothers/fathers or resource
speakers; participating on site-based committees or serving as the extra
pair of hands that helps extend the staff's time by copying, making
materials or working on any one of a variety of classroom projects.
Be
ready to choose your day, time and particular area of interest when
the PTO/PTA and teachers need additional help. The schools appreciate
your support and any amount of time that you may be able to offer.
Tempe
Elementary values the time and commitment volunteers make to the students
and staff in the district. Each volunteer has special gifts to share
that enhance and enrich the schools.
Being
a volunteer brings rewards as well as challenges. With your help, the
schools can maximize their potential and better meet the needs of students
and staff.
Because
student safety is of great concern, community volunteers are required
to:
1.
Complete an application.
• To Download the Volunteer Application, click
here
• To Download the Volunteer Handbook, click
here
2. Have it notarized;
there are several notaries at the district office for your convenience.
3. Be fingerprinted at no cost.
Please call Karly at (480) 730-7115 to
schedule an appointment.
4 Your references
will be checked. Upon completion of your application, we will place
you at a school site that will meet with your needs.
For more information on becoming a volunteer in the Tempe
Elementary Schools, call the Volunteer Office

Our
Volunteers . . .
Tempe Elementary
is fortunate to have many outstanding volunteers who offer their time
and energy in our schools. The following individuals were selected by
their peers as exemplary models of volunteerism within their school
community and represent only a sampling of our incredible volunteer
base. The Tempe Elementary School District is grateful for each and
every one of its volunteers and the valuable contributions that he/she
makes to our children.

What the Teachers are saying
. . .
“The children absolutely love reading with Jack (Dietrich) and
I sincerely appreciate his help with reading and the special time he
shares with each child. He has such a kind, gentle way with children.”
–
Amy Wojcik, First Grade Teacher at Frank
School
“She (Ethel Nelson) comes to Laird one day each week to read to
our students. She spends all day going from room to room reading her
books and passing out hugs. She dresses up for every holiday and is
a favorite reader as we celebrate “Read Across America”
each year. Mrs. Nelson is a widow on a fixed budget, yet each holiday
she spends her money buying supplies and candy to make a small gift
for every child she reads to that day.”
–
Sandy Etheredge, Second Grade Teacher at Laird
School
“Susan (Wong) is the PTA President at Curry School. She goes the
extra mile for Curry kids and families. Her heart is big and her energy
unlimited. She spends hours each week volunteering in the classroom
and collating our weekly newsletter to parents. You can see Susan at
every event at Curry.”
–
Pamela Burnsworth, Administrative Assistant at Curry
School
“She
(Wendy Jung) does everything with a smile and words of encouragement.
The students love her presence and so do I. Her enthusiasm for life
flows over into the lives of our classroom.”
–
Tracy Watanabe, Third Grade Teacher at Broadmor
School
“She
(Suzanne Bilby) is a secretary, small group leader, computer whiz, classroom
manager, policeman, expert in reading, writing, math, theme, and most
importantly, an expert in the way she loves children. She will jump
in to tutor a struggling child or enrich a bright one. Teaching is difficult,
but walking into a situation where you are not in charge, don’t
know the routine, must try to understand 27 children and what the teacher
“really wants,” while loving every minute of it, takes the
work of an angel. I can’t say enough about what volunteers do
in a classroom where love is not an abundant thing found at home.”
–
Carolyn Bilby, Third Grade Teacher at Frank
School
–
Florence Geck, First Grade Teacher at Broadmor
School
“Esther
(Zamel) is the picture of what we used to call a “room mother,”
but she really works for any teacher who needs her help. She is highly
competent, and she spends a GREAT deal of time and her own resources
to bring special things to the Holdeman campus. She is truly a “volunteer’s
volunteer.”
–
Ann Piedra, School Counselor at Holdeman
School
“Carol
(Crimmins) is a professor at ASU and SCC yet she finds time each day
to assist in my classroom. She goes above and beyond the call of duty.
Besides helping me in the classroom she often provides my kindergartners
with a daily healthy snack and treats for our classroom treasure box.
The children love her and we are all very grateful for her.”
–
Kathy Repp, Kindergarten Teacher at Broadmor
School
“She
(Carolyn Watson) has worked to make the job of teaching much easier
and enjoyable in a variety of ways, including providing food and “goodies”
for the teachers, taking on landscaping issues around the school to
make the campus more beautiful, and providing additional funding for
Fees teachers to help with school supplies. Carolyn is constantly looking
for ways to improve life at Fees and is richly deserving of recognition.”

Mark Atwood, Seventh Grade Social Studies Teacher at Fees
Middle School.
