Full-Day/Half-Day Kindergarten Registration
Registration for Fall 2008 for all Tempe Elementary
schools except Ward Traditional Academy is on-going at the district
office (Sanchez Administration Building) located on the northeast corner
of Rural Road and Southern Avenue Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.
to 4 p.m. During these hours you may call (480) 730-7325 or 730-7406
for more information.
Parents are
able
to
register
children
who will turn 5 before January 1, 2009. Please allow about an
hour for the registration process.

Free full-day kindergarten
is offered at all Tempe Elementary schools and is available to all
children no matter where
they live. Free half-day kindergarten is offered
at Broadmor Elementary School. Award-winning before- and after-school
care is available on site through the East
Valley Boys and Girls Clubs, City
of Tempe Kid Zone and the City
of Phoenix Parks and Recreation.

Registration/Enrollment
School begins August 4! Registration for new students of Tempe Elementary School District is now available at each of the Tempe Elementary Schools, with the exception of the newly constructed Holdeman and Thew schools. (See below for details about registration at these two schools.)
It’s important to register soon, as classes at some Tempe Elementary Schools are full or close to capacity. Please bring your child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and two items that show residency, such as a water bill, electric bill or phone bill. Please keep in mind that registration takes about an hour.
Registration for Holdeman Elementary will be held July 21-25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gililland Middle School located at 1025 S. Beck Avenue. The Holdeman School office will hold registration July 28 through August 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Registration for Thew Elementary will be held July 21-25 from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Escalante Center located at 2150 East Orange Street. The Thew School office will hold registration July 28 through August 1 from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

The following information is needed to enroll your child:
1.
Certified Birth Certificate (may
be obtained from the state of birth) For children who were born
in Arizona, a certified birth certificate may be obtained by
an immediate family member at the Arizona Office of Vital Records,
1818 West Adams St., Phoenix, AZ 85007 (www.hs.state.az.us/vitalrcd).
It takes about 3-6 weeks to receive the certificate. The cost
is $10 for births 1990 to present and $15 for births prior to
1990. A certified birth certificate can also be obtained through
express service on the Internet at www.vitalchek.com. For more

2.
Immunization records - State law requires immunizations
to attend school. Students who have not started the immunizations
or are overdue for the next dose will be excluded from school.
Upon enrollment into an Arizona school, parents must provide
the child's shot record that has been signed by a doctor's
office or medical clinic. Please note the immunizations required
for school registration below.
All kindergarten through eighth-grade students:
• Hepatitis B (series of three doses)
• Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (DTP)
• Tdap required for sixth grade (11-year olds)
• Polio
• Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) (two doses)
• Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine* - kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth, seventh and eighth grades
• Meningococcal (MCV4) - required for sixth grade (11-year olds)
Preschool:
• Hepatitis B
• Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (DTP)
• Polio
• Haemophilus Influenzae b (HIB) series
• Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine
• Hepatitis A vaccine**
• Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine
* As of August 2008, all students in preschool, Head Start, kindergarten,
first, second, third, fourth, seventh and eighth grades are required to have the varicella (chicken
pox) vaccine or the parent may verify that the student has had the
disease.
** Children, age 1 through 5 years old, who attend a licensed day care
facility
or Head Start in Maricopa County must also receive Hepatitis A vaccine.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health offers immunizations
to children younger than 18 years old who are uninsured. To receive
information on time, date and locations of immunization clinics, call
the Immunization Hotline at (602) 506-6767 (English and Spanish).

Enrollment
Tempe
Elementary Schools welcomes students from outside the district’s
geographical boundaries. Parents and students who reside outside
the district’s boundaries can choose any Tempe Elementary
School, as long as the school has sufficient space and the parents
provide transportation.
Over 1,800 parents who live outside the Tempe Elementary boundaries
take advantage of open enrollment.

Preschool
Families with three
and four-year-olds can apply for space in the TEDI (Tempe Early
Developmental Intervention) Preschool at Getz
School, the TOTS (Tempe Opportunities To Succeed) Preschool
at Evans Elementary School and Frank
Elementary School, Holdeman Elementary
School, Nevitt Elementary School
and Wood Elementary School, or the
Family Literacy Program at Frank which includes adult
education for the parents in the Tempe Elementary District. Head
Start Programs are available at Curry
Elementary School and Getz School as well as at other locations
in Tempe and Guadalupe. A small number of tuition subsidies are available
for private preschool programs participating in the Early Childhood
Block Grant. Most programs require that families qualify for free or
reduced lunch subsidies in order to receive services. Getz accepts those
who do not qualify for these subsidies but can pay tuition.
Most programs are
accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young
Children
or the National Commission for Early Care and Education Programs, and
all offer qualified staff and appropriate learning environments for
developing language and literacy, social skills and school readiness.
