Wood Elementary Students Receive Holiday Shopping Spree from Tempe Elks
Contributed by Shannon Cunningham, Assistant Principal at Wood Elementary
For the past nine years, the Tempe Elks Lodge #2251 has generously given back to students at Wood School during the holidays. This year, 30 Wood students were selected for a holiday shopping spree to meet their needs going into the holiday season.
The students arrived at Wood in the early morning hours on Saturday, December 9. Despite it still being dark and cold outside, students arrived with huge smiles waiting to take a bus to Walmart with a variety of school volunteers who ranged from office staff, classified staff, teachers, and administrators. Once at Walmart, each student was paired with a volunteer from the school and/or one of the Tempe Elks community members to shop for $100 worth of clothing, shoes, and other necessities. The students filled their carts with items their parents had shared that they need such as pajamas, shirts, pants, jackets, shoes, socks, and underwear. The students had a great time picking out clothes with their favorite princesses and superheroes.
"The shopping was the best part!” said Third-Grade Student Desirae McClure. “I got a gold dress with sparkles to wear on our field trip to the Nutcracker ballet. Our teacher wants us to wear fancy clothes on that day.”
After all the students completed their shopping, they boarded the bus to head to the Tempe Elks Lodge where lunch and crafts were waiting for them. As they worked on their craft and enjoyed their lunch, it was announced that someone special came to visit them. Everyone gathered out front and was greeted by Santa Claus who arrived in style on a Harley Davidson motorcycle led by reindeer motorcycles in pairs of two ahead of him. The students took pictures with Santa who brought each of them a toy and a candy cane.
“It was really fun! I really liked the Elks. They helped me find jeans that fit me and I got a big fluffy jacket that is so warm,” said First-Grade Student Carlton Smith. “The motorcycles were so funny one had Rudolph’s nose and antlers. Also, I've never seen Santa on a motorcycle before, it was so cool!”
Thank you to the Tempe Elks Lodge #2251 for giving back to Wood Elementary students and families. We are grateful for your partnership and support!
