Rover Elementary Receives National Recognition for Music Education Program

Post Date:05/15/2018

NAMMF_18_SMMARover Elementary has been honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from The NAMM Foundation for their outstanding commitment to music education. The SupportMusic Merit Award recognizes individual schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the SupportMusic Merit Award, Rover Elementary answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“Rover has always been strong in arts integration and arts education. Music connects us to our community—we have many parents, grandparents, and community members who support our music program with their attendance at various musical events,” said Rover Music and Choir Teacher Karen Kuehmann. “We believe the arts have an important role in developing the whole child. Music is a unique subject in brain development, helping students to build connections between their right artistic side of the brain and their left logical side.”

This award recognizes that Rover Elementary is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The legislation guides policy implementation in the states and replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act which was often criticized for an overemphasis on testing – while leaving behind subjects such as music. ESSA recommends music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.

“This designation recognizes what we are already doing here at Rover, providing expanded instruction in band, orchestra, and choir beginning in third-grade. We also have a strong musical theater afterschool program and other music clubs,” said Kuehmann.

With students given the opportunity to begin learning musical instruments and perform their musical talents as early as third-grade, Rover Elementary has and continues to be a strong proponent for music education.
