ThewBizTown1_400x244More often than not, teachers will ask their students, “What would you like to be when you grow up?” Thanks to a fantastic field trip opportunity, Thew Elementary fifth-graders were able to begin understanding what it takes to be workers and consumers in today’s world through Junior Achievement (JA) of Arizona BizTown!

JA BizTown is an engaging, hands-on program that introduces fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders to economic concepts, workplace skills, and personal and business finances in a student-sized town built just for them. Students first take part in a series of classroom lessons where they work together to create business plans, calculate operating costs, design a marketing campaign, apply for jobs, vote for city officials, explore careers, and more. Then, they put their skills to work by becoming employees for a day at JA BizTown, an on-site learning facility that features more than 40 different businesses and industries.

From managing a farmers market, to checking in and attending to patients at the health care center, Thew fifth-graders experienced real-world jobs that they have thought about as their future careers. All students participated as both employees and consumers through hands-on activities that included paying taxes and utilities, buying advertising from the radio station, purchasing insurance, depositing paychecks and buying products from other businesses, handling customer service, and much more!

Thew Fifth-Grade Teacher Ariel Salo remembers going to JA BizTown when she was a student and was thrilled for the opportunity to bring her students this year.

“It was exciting to see my students get the opportunity to run their own businesses and work collaboratively as a team,” said Salo. “It’s such a great experience for them to get an introduction to what’s to come in their future careers! I would recommend all students get the chance to visit JA BizTown.”

More than 24,000 Arizona students visit JA BizTown each year. If you would like to learn more about JA BizTown, please visit their website at
