BroadmorKidZone_KidsPlayingWithBlocks_400x244For the last five years, Kid Zone has been more than just a place for kids to kill time before and after school. Rather, it serves as a safe, enriching, and nurturing space for kids in the Tempe community to attend before and after school hours. Over the summer, five sites received full accreditation status by the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence (AzCASE) – becoming the first AzCASE accredited sites in the state!

The Tempe Elementary School District sites recognized Aguilar Elementary, Fuller Elementary, and Wood Elementary. Kid Zone site managers completed a rigorous accreditation process to receive the recognition.

“When I visit the Kid Zone program, I observe students actively engaged, with smiles on their faces,” said Jessica Larsen, Principal at Aguilar Elementary School. “Having the Kid Zone program at Aguilar Elementary has certainly supported positive peer relationships and continued academic growth.”

AzCASE seeks to promote accessible, high-quality expanded learning opportunities for all Arizona children and youth. To further that mission, they developed the set of state standards for out-of-school programs. The accreditation process looked at Kid Zone’s implementation of seven quality standards, including Positive Relationships, Equity and Inclusion, Intentional Programming, and more. The five Kid Zone sites didn’t just pass – they passed with flying colors, according to the Executive Director of the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence.BroadmorKidZone_BigSmile_400x244

In the fall, Kid Zone plans to start the process to accredit the remaining sites, and become a fully accredited program.

Kid Zone operates both before- and afterschool programs at 18 Tempe and Kyrene Schools. Their program is for children in kindergarten through fifth-grade at 16 schools, and kindergarten through eighth-grade at Ward Traditional Academy. In addition, they offer programs for sixth- through eighth-graders from Tempe Academy (Kid Zone at Broadmor), Connolly Middle School (Kid Zone at Curry), Fees College Preparatory Middle School (Kid Zone at Rover), and Kyrene Middle School (Kid Zone at Waggoner). A preschool program is available at Getz for three-year-olds. Pre-K students and three-year-olds through kindergartners can also attend the Meyer Montessori site.

Kid Zone administration thanks all managers, administrators, site staff, kids, and families for their continued support of the best out-of-school program in Arizona!
