Two TD3 Teachers Awarded $5K Through Wishes for Teachers Grant

Post Date:11/14/2018 1:56 PM

AllisonHolden_400x244As a way to thank and honor Arizona educators, each fall teachers are invited to fill out an online application through Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers detailing their school and classroom wish. Wishes are selected by a random drawing to receive a $5,000 grant. All wish recipients are invited to walk in the Fiesta Bowl Parade and be recognized on-field at the Cheez-It® Bowl on December 26, 2018.

Not one, but two Tempe Elementary teachers were recently notified about being Wishes for Teachers grant recipients! Congratulations to Kyle Scatena, eighth-grade Math teacher at Connolly Middle School, and Allison Holden, fourth-grade teacher at Fuller Elementary.

Scatena and Holden both had great things to say about how this award would benefit their classrooms. Please see their responses below.

Why did you decide to enter the contest?

Holden: I want to support my students in any way possible and this is one way that I could support them.

Scatena: Honestly, I decided to enter the contest because of the huge lottery that was currently here, and I kept hearing "You have a zero percent chance of winning if you don't play", so I figured why not?

Describe how you felt when you received the letter telling you that you’d won.

Holden: When I got the phone call, I could barely contain myself. I wanted to scream but did not want to hurt the gentleman’s ear on the phone. I kept saying thank you and telling him I was excited. I am not sure he was able to say everything he was supposed to.

Scatena: My mouth dropped, and honestly I realized that "there's a zero percent chance of winning if you never play" is such a true statement. I honestly did not think I would win, but did it anyway. It was a great life lesson for me in general. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, and when you do... things will happen.

Scatena_400x244How do you plan on using the money for a rewarding program for your students?

Holden: I would like to get as much technology in my students’ hands as possible. The more technology we have, the better they will be at using it. Our world is very technology based and I want my students to get the opportunity to use it as much as possible. This grant will give us more computers to use throughout the day.

Scatena: I came up with the idea to use my money on reward programs for my students because I am a firm believer in positive reinforcements. My students are all in a house (think of Harry Potter) and they are divided up throughout all of my classes throughout the day. I give them points throughout the day through acts of kindness, answering questions, getting A's, B's and C's on tests, being polite or any other event that I feel deserves to be recognized. At the end of each semester, the winning house gets a reward. I wanted to make it a BIG reward and something that our students might not normally get the chance to do. I am planning on using this funding to go toward a big award for students such as going to a Coyotes game, Diamondbacks game, or out to eat with their family at a “fancy” restaurant.

Congratulations again to Kyle and Allison! We will be cheering you on at the upcoming Cheez-It® Bowl!
