Class posing with lettersStudents at Hudson Elementary School have been busy completing a special project to spread holiday cheer to active duty military members.

Fifth-Grade Teacher Marie Mikan worked with Phoenix radio station KMLE Country 107.9 to remember our soldiers through sending letters from students, and sharing gratitude for their service. Mikan was able to get the whole school involved, thanks to support from teachers and Hudson Elementary Principal Dr. Jeff Shores. Approximately 500 letters were written and delivered!

“I hope that this activity will help students understand how important it is to express gratitude for those who serve in the armed forces,” Mikan shared.

This is Mikan’s third year organizing this event in the Tempe Elementary School District.

“It was my goal to bring the kids’ attention to the fact that we need to thank the people who are giving so much,” said Mikan. “With Veterans Day last month, I wanted to make our students aware as to why they had the day off, and to honor those who serve the country. I also wanted to bring attention to those students who have a family member who has served or is serving in the military, to make our students aware of what that is like.”Student writing letter

Mikan shared that after discussing the topic, students wanted to do more. They asked if they could send care packages and write extra letters. The experience impacted the students, and she is looking forward to finding more ways to connect students with veterans here in the area, and keep growing their awareness of the sacrifices that others have made for our freedom.

Thank you, Marie, for coordinating this special activity! Marie is another one of the countless TD3 employees who go above and beyond to help learning come alive for students, and believe that relationships matter.
