Meyer Montessori Holds Holiday Food Drive with a Twist

Post Date:12/21/2018 9:19 AM

Student with donated food itemsThe Meyer Montessori community spent the holiday season collecting food for those in need, but it was a bit different from typical food drives.

This food drive collected items for a non-profit organization called The Rachel Way. The Rachel Way collects food specifically for those with dietary restrictions. Many food pantries are not able to accommodate those individuals with food allergies, intolerances, and autoimmune diseases like celiac disease. The Rachel Way’s mission is to collect and distribute allergy friendly foods to those in need. Since opening in 2015, they have been able to provide allergen-safe foods as well as educational support for many in need.

The food drive, initiated by a Meyer Montessori parent, ran from December 3-14. Once all items were tallied, the classroom with the most participation was Ms. Rachel’s class! Their class will receive a Valentine’s Day Party to celebrate bringing in the most food items. Each family that donated was entered into a drawing to receive Zoo Lights tickets. An old-fashioned popcorn machine was even donated to the school as a thank you! It was a great opportunity to teach students about food insecurity, and thinking about others’ needs.

Thank you Meyer Montessori community for giving back this holiday season!
