English Learning

Upon registering your student, families will be required to complete a Home Language Survey (HLS) form. If a parent/guardian identifies a language other than English is spoken at home, the child will be administered the state adopted placement called  AZELLA (Arizona English Language Learner Assessment).

Based on your student's level of English language proficiency for listening, speaking, reading and writing competency, they will be classified in one of four categories:

• Pre-Emergent/Emergent
• Basic
• Intermediate
• Proficient

If the student scores less than proficient on the placement assessment, he/she will be placed in the English Language program.

All students identified as an English Learner (EL), whether they are in the EL program or withdrawn by a parent/guardian, are re-evaluated annually to determine their English proficiency using the AZELLA (Arizona English Language Learner Assessment).

Based on the AZELLA results, students are classified is one of four categories:

• Pre-Emergent/Emergent
• Basic
• Intermediate
• Proficient

Only those students whose AZELLA score is not Proficient will continue in the English Language program the following school year.
