At Tempe Elementary, we believe that arts provide an avenue for students to discover, explore, and refine their talents. The opportunities invite students to experiment with new mediums and express themselves in new and interesting ways.

Visual Arts highlights include:

  • All kindergarten through 5th grade students receive visual arts instruction from their classroom teacher – often integrated across the curriculum.
  • All 2nd through 5th graders receive workshop instruction from a local teaching artist as part of the Studio Artist Program sponsored by the City of Tempe.
  • New in 2024! Ward Traditional Academy and Shamley School offer visual art instruction as a specials class for K-5 students, and as an elective for 6-8.
  • At the middle school level, students may choose visual arts as an elective course from a variety of options.

Each year, the program serves 5,000 Tempe Elementary students by providing visual arts instruction to every 2nd-5th grade classroom in 17 of our schools. This program expands students’ understanding of the arts and allows them to interact with professional artists from the local community.
