Immersive, Personalized Learning Helps Students Dive into Their Curiosity and Passions

It only takes one spark to ignite deep curiosity. Just ask Arredondo fourth grader Charlie Fusco, who discovered an interest in bees after a recent class field trip to the Desert Botanical Garden.
Eager to learn more, Charlie chose to dive deeper, beginning her own research. That research led her to L.L. Langstroth, the inventor of the Langstroth hive, now the most widely used beehive design in North America.
Intrigued, she set out to build her own wooden model that mirrors the Langstroth version. Along the way, Charlie explored how the hive works and gained a deeper understanding of how its design supports both honey production and the sustainability of bee colonies. Instead of simply moving on to the next concept, she was able to dig in, ask questions, and make meaningful connections.
Through this immersive, hands-on process, Charlie experienced learning in a way that went beyond books or online research. By bringing her ideas to life, she engaged in authentic exploration and meaningful challenges.
“There’s so many books out there and you can’t always find all the details,” Charlie said. “When you do a project, there are all these different things, like you can see it in your own vision and build something with it.”
This kind of depth, choice, and curiosity-driven learning is intentionally built into The Immersive 9, where students are empowered to explore their interests, think critically, and engage deeply with the world around them.
