The district Early Childhood Programs utilize a combination of teacher-directed and child-directed activities and a variety of interest centers to encourage children to explore and learn in an active hands-on way. Activities are planned to promote:

• Language development
• Beginning literacy and numeracy skills
• Problem solving and logical thinking
• Gross and fine motor development
• Creative expression

Children are guided to develop independence, self-confidence, social skills and a love of learning. Guidelines for district preschool teachers come from the Early Learning Standards, Teaching Strategies Gold Assessment, IEPs for students with special needs, and Harcourt Preschool Curriculum.
