The goal of social studies instruction is to help our students make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. The five social studies disciplines of American History, World History, Civics/Government, Geography, and Economics form the foundation for understanding the human experience and developing related knowledge and skills for all Tempe Elementary School District students. The Academic Standards for Social Studies and Distribution of Concepts Across Grade Levels provide further details regarding the strands and concepts our students will learn.
Social Studies Philosophy
In order to prepare our students to become active and informed citizens in our society, social studies instruction is vital for our kindergarten through eighth grade students. Well-informed citizens will understand our political, cultural, and economic interaction with the rest of the world. Geographic knowledge expands the understanding of our development and identity in the world.
Students will develop knowledge of essential facts, concepts, people, and events as well as a grasp of reasoning, inquiry, and research skills. Furthermore, they will learn how to frame and test hypotheses, and develop informed opinions based on different points of view.
