Tempe Elementary Kindergarten Program

Where Bright Futures Begin.

Enroll In Tempe Elementary Schools, no matter where you live! Tempe Elementary has offered free, full-day kindergarten at all of its elementary schools since 2000. Our long-standing program is based on years of experience in delivering a full-day curriculum. For parents who prefer it, we also provide a highly acclaimed half-day kindergarten program at one of our elementary schools.

Age Requirements:

If your child turns 5 years old on or before August 31, 2019, he or she is eligible to start kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year. 

We welcome ready 4-year-olds! Children turning 5 years old between September 1 and December 31, 2019 can start kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year in any of our schools as long as:

  • they pass our FREE, one-hour readiness screening,
  • AND they enroll and start school within the first week of the school year. Four-year-olds may not start school after the first week of the school year!

Children turning 5 January 1, 2020 or after are NOT eligible for kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year. Please visit our Preschool website at: www.tempeschools.org/preschool to see our preschool options.

Before- and afterschool care
Award-winning before- and afterschool care is available at or near most of our schools through the East Valley Boys and Girls Clubs, City of Tempe Kid Zone and with other local organizations. How to Enroll:

Step 1: Complete the enrollment packet. Click here to request an enrollment packet, or download the enrollment packet here.

Step 2: Gather required documents:
  1. Child's certified birth certificate
  2. Immunization records
  3. Legitimate proof of current address (such as mortgage, rental or lease agreement, utility bill, phone/cable bill, bank statement, etc.)
  4. Open Enrollment Application - only necessary if you live outside the attendance boundary for the school you are enrolling in

Screening Process for 4-year-olds

Only children turning 5-years-old September 1 through December 31 are required to be screened. During the screening, the parent will answer a short questionnaire and the child will complete some age-appropriate tasks. 

We will host 4 screenings at Bustoz Professional Learning Center, 2020 E. Carson Dr., Tempe, AZ 85282, on the following dates/times:

  • February 7 - 4:30-6:30 p.m.
  • March 21 - 4:30-6:30 p.m.
  • April 4 - 4:30-6:30 p.m.
  • May 16 - 4:30-6:30 p.m. 

Our summer screenings are at the following dates/times/locations:
  • June 12 - 1-7 p.m. at Bustoz Professional Learning Center
  • June 26 - 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Holdeman Elementary School, 1326 W. 18th St., Tempe, AZ 85281
  • June 27 - 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Thew Elementary School, 2130 E. Howe Ave., Tempe, AZ 85281

All 4.8 screenings will be completed by June 30. We will no longer screen in the months of July or August.
All students who pass the 4.8 Screener between January and June must begin school by the first Friday of the first week of school, August 9, 2019.  

 

No appointment is necessary.
